History
Marriages have been milled in Essex for 200 years. The milling process has been perfected through generations. To this day, they continue to create great, award-winning flour.
1824 - At 21, brothers William and Henry Marriage inherit Broomfield Mill. The Marriages family has farmed in Essex since the 1700s. William and Henry set about working with local wheat farmers to mill the grain.
1836 - What began as a windmill now becomes a steam mill as the brothers install a steam engine. This allows the mill to run through all weather.
1891 - With the birth of roller milling (in the late 1860's), the brothers make the jump and installed a roller mill at their Moulsham Mill.
1899 - Marriage's moves to Chelmsford with its very own railway siding. To this day, Marriage's remains here.
1952 - A new era is welcomed in at Marriage's Mill as electricity is installed.
1950s - Marriage's flour is first sold to home bakers.
1966 - The Chelmsford mill is expanded for increasing demand. New flour silos and a packing plant were added.
1986 - Marriages begins to mill organic flour aimed at the home baker market.
2012 - Marriages expands its artisan flour ranges. Specialty flours include seeded rye, and spelt.
2024 - Marriages celebrates 200 years as an esteemed flour mill and producer.
