Description
Emmer grain is an ancient or heritage grain. Wild Emmer can be traced back to the Fertile Crescent (A site in the Middle East thought to be where the first known farming methods occurred).
Emmer wheat is awned, meaning the head is hairy or bristle-like. Like Einkorn, Emmer is one of the first crops to be grown.
Emmer tastes sweet and nutty. The grain is rich in fibre and packed full of minerals. Emmer is suitable for milling flour to make bread of eating as a wholegrain.
Since 2002, husband and wife team, Andrew and Symbille Wikinson have developed wheat from their farm in Northumberland.
Their work and impact is far-reaching and has helped to support heritage grains.
